Change payment method on an order

It is possible to change the payment method on an order before it is processed. This can be useful if the payment method has not been created or mapped correctly, or if the customer, for some other reason, has paid in a different way than the one registered on the order. It is also possible to switch to No payment (invoice) to skip the payment step and prevent a conflict.

How to change the payment method

  1. Open the order under Order handling so you are on the order's detail page.
  2. Click the Options menu (the gear icon) on the order's toolbar.
  3. Select Change payment method.

This item is only shown if you have the permission to change payment method, and if there are payment methods to choose between on the installation.

The "Change payment method" window

In the window, you select the new payment method from a list. Depending on the method selected, a field for entering a transaction ID with the provider is shown. If the selected method has no payment provider behind it (e.g. a pure "no payment" method), the field is hidden, and a note is shown instead stating that the method does not require a transaction ID.

  • Test checks the selected payment method and the entered transaction ID directly against the provider's status lookup, without changing anything on the order. The result is shown as a status (e.g. authorized, captured, refunded, failed) together with the authorized, captured, and refunded amount. If the provider does not support a status lookup, or the order cannot be looked up, a corresponding message is shown instead.
  • If you change the payment method or transaction ID again, the displayed test result disappears, since it no longer says anything about the new choice.
  • Save moves the order to the selected payment method and transaction ID, regardless of what the test showed — the most common reason to use the feature is precisely that the saved combination is already wrong. You are asked to confirm the change before it is carried out.

Once the change has been saved, the page reloads so the order card and the other tabs reflect the new payment method.
